MANSFIELD COMMUTER RAIL STATION
Colantonio worked with the Greater Attleboro Regional Transit Authority, the MBTA and Amtrak to keep the existing station in operation while we built this new, 4,900 square-foot building just a few feet from the high-speed Acela train track.
We engineered and built a special staging system in collaboration with Amtrak, who continues to use this system on similar projects. We also modified the traffic and pedestrian walkway patterns to maintain the safe operation of the station and to allow handicapped accessibility.
Excavation for the new foundation revealed contaminated soil which was then removed, covered, tested and trucked for appropriate disposal. New structural fill was used to replace it.
Upgrading the site’s utilities were a major part of the downtown’s revitalization plan. Underground electrical, telephone and cable lines were installed to allow the removal of the existing telephone poles.
The project was designed by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc.
